Lumasense is pioneering the application of LED technology in the fields of architectural & functional illumination.
What is an LED?
LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. LEDs themselves are not new, but only recently have they become bright and economical enough for use in everyday installations. They are semi conductive devices that convert electrical energy into a discrete color of light: either Red, Green, or Blue.

New technology has allowed for the production of White LEDs as well. These are actually Blue LEDs used with special phosphors.
The basic components of an LED are:
- Semi conductive chip fabricated from a special die. Different compounds and substrates are used to produce unique colors
- Gallium Nitride = Blues & Greens
- Aluminum Indium Gallium Phosphide = Reds & Yellows
- Reflector cup
- Lens
- Cathode and anode lead

Why Illuminate with LEDs?
LEDs are rapidly replacing traditional incandescent & fluorescent sources of light in a number of applications. LED technology offers the following benefits:
- Ultra long usable life. LEDs never burn out, unlike traditional sources.
- Low maintenance costs. There are no gels, filters, lamps or parts to replace.
- Low power requirement. LEDs are more efficient at producing light per watt consumed. LEDs produce very little heat (heat is wasted energy).
- No buzzing, humming, or fan/engine distractions, and no UV radiation.
- Since LEDs are built on semiconductor technology, they are inherently capable of digital control. This enables an unprecedented amount of customization, control, and programmability of light.
What is the Bottom Line?
- More beautiful architecture
- Greater visibility for displays or events
- More effective corporate branding / imaging
- Better functionality where “moods” or “ environments are created with light.
Lumasense believes that because these benefits are so compelling, LEDs will fundamentally change how spaces are illuminated over the generation to come. |
